What else can I do to help combat prostate cancer in Virginia

The University of Virginia School of Medicine located in Charlottesville, has a very unique prostate cancer program in place, due in part mostly to the generosity and vision of Paul Mellon.  It was Mr. Mellon’s considerate bequest that founded the Paul Mellon Urologic Cancer Institute where research, diagnosis improvement, education and the development of treatment options are well under way.  Take a look through their website.  This is a great source of local information.

A Prostate Cancer Survivor’s Story

In June 2002, Charlie Hill, a founding member of the Hampton Roads Prostate Health Forum was diagnosed with prostate cancer. In December 2002, he underwent nerve-sparing surgery to remove his prostate gland at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD. The reality was the medical community had varying points of view regarding the best way to treat prostate cancer due to the many treatment modalities available. Feedback from the physicians indicates that it is difficult for any physician to tell men with potentially “curable” prostate cancer which form of treatment is the best.

In 2006, Mr. Hill began organizing a program to save lives of patients dying from prostate cancer. With the help from several Virginia experts in oncology and prostate cancer, Charlie Hill founded the Hampton Roads Prostate Health Forum.

In the spring of 2007, the group developed a position statement to capture and communicate the purpose and scope of the Forum. Founding members then invited representatives from regional health care organizations, Hampton Roads employers, and medical experts in prostate cancer to be a part of the Forum.

Early diagnosis is crucial in successful treatment of prostate cancer. Help spread the word for awareness of early diagnosis and support the research. Please donate your unwanted car, truck, boat or RV to the Prostate Cancer Awareness Project today.

Donating your car to the Prostate Cancer Awareness Project will help us ensure we get the word out there and help save lives.
