Prostate cancer statistics for the state of Pennsylvania

In the year 2010, 9,800 new cases of prostate cancer were registered in Pennsylvania, which resulted in 1,660 deaths. The Prostate Cancer Awareness Project needs your help to increase the prostate cancer survival rate so we can bring these numbers down.

Action News Sports Anchor Gary Papa Died from Prostate Cancer.

Gary Papa was a sportscaster with WPVI-TV in Philadelphia from April 1981 to June 2009. Papa joined the station in 1981, and became sports director in 1990.

He was diagnosed with prostate cancer, he told viewers in 2004, and the effects of his treatment were visible after his absences from the air. He continued to work while receiving chemotherapy. Three years later in July 2007, during the 6:00PM Action News broadcast, Papa along with Jim Gardner announced that he once again was going through chemotherapy.

Papa died on June 19, 2009 at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. He was just 54 years old.
